Good News - Ohio History Fund grant!

The Fort Recovery Historical Society, in collaboration with Ball State University, has been chosen as one of 10 applications to be funded by the Ohio History Fund. The grant will be used to create an on-line StoryMap of the museum's prehistoric collection. We have always regretted that this impressive display is not handicapped accessible - two flights of stairs separate it from the first floor (which is handicapped accessible). With the creation of this StoryMap, visitors will be able to "view" our prehistoric collection on-line and while at the museum on an iPad. The project is to be completed by summer 2021. Thanks to all those Ohio Taxpayers who checked The Ohio History Fund when paying their income taxes. 

This project made possible in part by a grant from the Ohio History Connection’s History Fund. The History Fund is supported exclusively by voluntary donations of Ohio income tax refunds, sales of Ohio History "mastodon" license plates, and designated gifts to the Ohio History Connection. www.ohiohistory.org/historyfund

Author John Winkler speaks on Sunday September 22 at 3:00 pm!

Fort Recovery’s favorite author returns to tell the story of Peckuwe*!

As the Revolutionary War took place near the Atlantic, Native Americans and British rangers fought American settlers on the Ohio River frontier in warfare of unsurpassed intensity. When those attacks threatened to drive the Americans from their settlements in Kentucky, Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton and other frontiersmen guided an army of 970 Kentuckians into what is now Ohio to attack the Native American bases from which the raids originated.

Winkler’s book traces Colonel George Rogers Clark's lightning expedition to destroy Chalawgatha and Peckuwe, and describes how on August 8, 1780 his Kentuckians clashed with an army of 450 Native Americans, under Black Hoof, Buckongahelas and Simon Girty, at the battle of Peckuwe. You won’t want to miss Winkler describe this, the largest Revolutionary War battle on the Ohio River frontier.

*Peckuwe was a Shawnee village located near present day Springfield, Ohio.
