Fort Recovery VFW Buys Dennis Paintings! Donates Them Back to Museum!

It was a most dramatic moment on October 16^th, when a gentleman at the back of the audience at the Fort Recovery Historical Society Auction made the final bid of $2750 for three original watercolor paintings that had been donated to the auction by English artist, Peter Dennis. Peter had created the paintings to illustrate the dramatic events of St. Clair’s Defeat as described in the just released book, Wabash 1791, by author John Winkler.

But then to the amazement of those 200+ guests present, that unknown bidder, Vern Mescher, stood and announced that he was representing the Fort Recovery VFW, and THAT organization was donating the paintings back to the FR Historical Society/Museum! The astonished and elated crowd stood and gave him, and the VFW he was representing, a standing ovation! It elevated the mood for the remainder of the evening.

Historical Society president, Helen LeFevre said that Fort Recovery Community members and Museum Patrons and supporters from all over will be forever grateful to the VFW and the VFW Men’s Auxiliary for this donation and the memorable moment at Auction 2011. If that weren’t enough, Commander of the VFW, Ken Lamm announced that the VFW and Men’s Auxiliary would also fund the framing of those paintings.

Museum director, Nancy Knapke said, “We owe SO much to Peter Dennis who created and donated the paintings and to the local VFW organization. They are responsible for:

1) More attention to our museum

2) Feelings of pride and ownership in our museum by local residents and organizations

3) Financial support for museum projects and events

4) A new display for our museum that will surely garner attention and bring home the significance of the 1791 Battle on the Banks of the Wabash!”

The paintings will be on permanent display in the recently renovated museum. Pictured above with the new display is Ken Lamm, Commander of the VFW, Steve Westgerdes, President of the VFW Men’s Auxiliary and Nancy Knapke, Museum Director.

Great news! The first 200 issues of Wabash 1791 sold out the first two days of its realease here in Fort Recovery in early November. And now, finally a new shipment of John Winkler's book of St. Clair's defeat has arrived. The books are available at Kaup's Pharmacy in Fort Recovery (419-375-2323). Their hours are 9-6 M-F, 9-4 S, and 1-3 on Sundays. For patrons, the book's purchase price is $17 including tax. For all others, the cost is $18 plus 7% tax ($19.26.)

If you want to order one and have it sent to you, email your name and address to Nancy Knapke at fortrecoverystatemuseum@yahoo.com, and she will send the book(s) to you. (Copies have already been sent as far away as Arizona and Finland.) If the books need to be mailed, the actual cost of mailing will be added to the prices listed above. (Mailing cost varies depending on distance.)

Wabash 1791 is so well written and illustrated, and it is very readable. Many have already been sold for Christmas presents. What a great idea for anyone, but especially for those with ties to Fort Recovery. As always, thank you for your interest and support! Guided tours are available by appointment March through November. You can request a tour by phone, or request a guided tour online.

"Wabash 1791: St. Clair's Defeat" paintings donated for auction!

Peter Dennis, highly respected artist of Nottinghamshire, England has donated to the Fort Recovery Historical Society the three original watercolor paintings he created for the book, Wabash 1791: St Clair’s Defeat. He donated them to be auctioned off at the historical society’s One-of-a-Kind Auction which will be held this Sunday, October 16 at 5:00 at the Fort Recovery Middle School.

The donation occurred when inquiries were made to Osprey Press of Oxford England, the publishers of Wabash 1791, about the possibility of procuring copies of the paintings in poster form which could then be sold at the Fort Recovery Museum. Ultimately, direct contact was established with the artist himself who said, “I would like to support the museum, and the efforts of your community – it’s just the sort of place I would head for if I visited Fort Recovery."

Museum directory, Nancy Knapke said, “We just could not believe the artist’s generosity and our good fortune. The bidding for this truly one-of-a-kind item should be so exciting.”

The historical society is accepting bids from those not able to attend. Those interested bidders for this collection of the three 16/23 inch water-colour paintings may submit their bids by calling 419-375-4170.

Book Release Celebration Nov 5-6! "Wabash 1791: St. Clair's Defeat"

The 220^th Anniversary of The Battle of the Wabash (St. Clair’s Defeat) will be marked with a significant event in Fort Recovery, Ohio. Osprey Press will release Wabash 1791: St. Clair’s Defeat, by author, John Winkler on the very site of that significant battle, and three weeks before the book’s national release.

In recognition of the importance of this event, the Fort Recovery Historical Society in conjunction with Osprey Press has organized a series of events to be held in Fort Recovery throughout the weekend of November 5 and 6.

Sat. Nov 5, 9:00 – 2:00 Fort Recovery State Museum.
An in-service for educators will be conducted by John Winkler, author of Wabash 1791: St Clair’s Defeat. Included will be a 2-hour Battlefield Walk with the Author. Participants will walk the sites where approximately 600 soldiers and up to 250 women and children lost their lives. In addition to delineation of the US Army’s strategic failures, Winkler will explain the overpowering effective strategies of the Indian Confederation led by Little Turtle and Blue Jacket.

Sat. Nov 5, Evening. The patrons of the museum, officials from the Ohio Historical Society and other dignitaries are invited to the museum for a private reception with Mr. Winkler. Available at the reception will be the very first copies of Wabash 1791.

Sun, Nov 6, Noon to 5:00, The Fort Recovery Museum will be open.

Sun, Nov 6, Noon. 25 select individuals have been invited to the second two-hour Battlefield Walk with the Author.

Sun, Nov 6, 3:00pm and 4:00pm. Concluding the weekend events are two formal afternoon presentations at by Mr. Winkler in the Community Room of the State Museum at 1 Fort Site Street. The talks are open to the public and are presented free of charge. Winkler’s newly released book will be available for purchase and can be signed by the author.

About the Historic Event at Fort Recovery

In 1791, the federal government of the United States faced its first crisis. Two years into the presidency of George Washington and three years after ratification of the US Constitution, raids by American Indians, living in what is now Ohio, had become intolerable. Unless the United States acted to take control of the area between the Ohio River and the Great Lakes, the new nation would have no future west of the Appalachian Mountains.

Major General Arthur St. Clair led an American army of about 2,000 into the region and on November 4^th, the campaign ended in what was, in proportion to the size of the US Army at the time, by far the greatest disaster in American military history. At the battle of the Wabash, also known as St. Clair's Defeat, more Americans died than in any prior battle, more than would fall on any field before the Civil War. In the tactical masterpiece of their military history, an Indian army destroyed a force that was larger, encamped on high ground, supported by artillery, and led by many of the best American officers of the Revolutionary War.

!!!Osprey Releases Wabash, 1791: St. Clair’s defeat here!!!

We were excited when we discovered that John Winkler’s book Wabash, 1791, had been accepted for printing by Osprey Publishing, of Oxford England, the premier publisher of military and military warfare books. But now the excitement grows as we just found out that Osprey will release the book HERE on November 5, three weeks before it is released nationally. Fittingly the book will be released on the 220th anniversary and on the very ground of St. Clair’s Defeat! What could be more appropriate and perfect?

A committee composed of author, John Winkler; Osprey representative, John Tintera; and museum representatives, is working on a succession of special activities for that November weekend, including: an inservice for history teachers; a private party with the author for patrons and other dignitaries; an RSVP actual battlefield walk with the author; and an author/speaker presentation that will be open to the public.

Archaeological Family Fun Fest - Sun Oct 2, 12:00-4:00

Activities will include artifact show, artifact identification, flinknapping demonstrations, various archaeology speakers, hands-on archaeological activities for children and families, displays and activities in the log cabin, blacksmith shop and blockhouses. Numerous activities for the whole family to enjoy in addition to the recently renovated Fort Recovery State Museum! This event is held as part of Ohio Archaeology Month.

No fee for the Archaeological Family Fun Day and speakers; normal admission fee for the museum.

Highlight: Children's Area in the Community Room

When visiting the children’s area of the Fort Recovery State Museum, boys and girls can enjoy dressing up as 1790s Indians, Anthony Wayne soldiers, or as pioneers! How excited they are to see themselves in the full length mirror! Many also love to have their pictures taken with the nearby, life-size soldier and his horse.

Also available are Lincoln logs that make into large forts. With the toy soldiers in place, the fort is ready to be defended! Toy Indian figures are also available along with items for creating a realistic Indian village.

Visiting children love the selection of various animal furs, antlers, and turtle shells. They use imprints on hand in the center to make leaf or animal skin sketches. For anyone who loves word searches, puzzles, or coloring pages, a variety of these activities are available for all ages.

The children’s area, located in the basement of the museum, was donated in memory of Theresa LeFevre who loved to turn all children on to the enjoyment and learning of history.

Exciting results from BSU field school! (new newspaper and blog articles added)

As part of the National Park Service American Battlefield Protection Program grant, Ball State University's Department of Anthropology held an archaeology field school from May 16 to June 17 under the direction of Dr. Mark Groover. As part of their excavation, the field school students discovered a 2 ft wide trench that extended 17 ft east/west almost exactly aligned with the Greenville Treaty Line. The trench contained multiple closely-spaced post holes of various sizes with battlefield period artifacts (including bone buttons, shell buttons, lead musket ball, Charleville musket center band) found in or close to the trench. The trench with postholes almost certainly extends beyond 17 ft - additional excavation units in the future could confirm this. The trench/post hole feature most likely represents a palisade wall of the fort or a fort-related structure.

Open houses were held on June 13 and 14, so the community and museum patrons could view the field school discoveries and talk to the archaeologist and students.

St. Clair Run - Mercer Health 5K Challenge

It’s not too late!! Register for the St. Clair 5K Run/Walk that will happen on Saturday, July 16th at 8:30AM. Registration takes place on the front porch of the museum starting at 7:30AM. The race starts in front of the museum with cannon fire and concludes with refreshments and awards at Van Trees Park next door.

$15 gets you preregistered for this race AND a shirt with the logo above. The registration cost is only $8 if you want the race only – NO shirt. (Note that preregistration pricing ends July 5th!) What's up with the flags in Monument Park?

Wondering what's going on in Monument Park? In collaboration with the Fort Recovery Historical Society and Ohio Historical Society, archaeologists from Ball State University are starting geophysical surveys as part of the National Park Service Battlefield Protection Program grant that was awarded to BSU last July. The flags at Monument Park are outlining 20 meter x 20 meter grids and the cluster of flags indicate specific types of metal detector hits. All data is being recorded and tallied. A total of 23 acres will be surveyed around town as part of the grant. Please feel free to stop by and visit us, ask questions and learn more about what we are doing.
